Subaru of America is issuing a recall for over 118,000 vehicles due to a defect that could hinder airbag deployment during crashes.

Subaru of America has initiated a recall affecting 118,723 wagons and sedans across the U.S. due to a critical safety issue identified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall specifically targets certain models of the Outback and Legacy produced between 2020 and 2022. The root of the concern lies within the Occupant Detection System (ODS), where a capacitor may become cracked and short-circuit. This malfunction can result in the front passenger airbag failing to deploy in the event of a collision, posing a significant risk to occupants.

Subaru has recorded 253 warranty claims that are directly linked to this issue, though, fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection to the defect. Vehicle owners are expected to receive notification about the recall within the next 60 days. Additionally, owners have the option to proactively check if their vehicle is affected by entering their car's VIN on the NHTSA's dedicated recall website.
