Best utes in Australia
Seven dual cabs compared on the numbers that decide it — payload, GCM, real towing headroom and what they actually transact for. Every ute here claims 3,500 kg; only some can use it.
Indicative 2026 metro drive-away pricing and manufacturer figures for popular 4x4 dual-cab automatics. Confirm the exact variant's plate figures before towing.
Towing 3,500 kg is the marketing number, not the usable one
Every ute in this table advertises a 3,500 kg braked tow rating, so the rating tells you nothing about which one to buy. The number that matters is GCM — gross combination mass — the maximum the vehicle and trailer can weigh together.
Work it out like this: GCM minus your loaded trailer weight leaves what the ute itself may weigh, including passengers, fuel, canopy, bull bar and tow-ball download. On most dual cabs, hitching a 3,000 kg van leaves only a few hundred kilos of payload — which four adults and a full tank will exceed before you pack a thing.
Ranger and Amarok V6 (6,400 kg GCM) and Triton (6,250 kg) give you the most usable headroom. HiLux, at 5,850 kg, gives the least of the mainstream group. Before you commit to a build, check your exact variant's rated capacity — plate figures move between series and even between model years.
Ford Ranger — the default, and deservedly so
The V6 Ranger is the most complete dual cab on sale here: the best-riding chassis in the class, a genuinely useful 6,400 kg GCM, and a cabin that doesn't feel like a work vehicle on a four-hour drive.
It's also the most expensive mainstream choice, and the V6's real-world fuel use sits around 9.5–10.5 L/100km — noticeably thirstier than the four-cylinder alternatives.
Toyota HiLux — buy it for resale and the dealer map
The HiLux is no longer the best-driving or best-equipped ute, and the 5,850 kg GCM is a genuine limitation for caravanners. What it still wins is resale — typically the strongest in the segment — and a service network that reaches places other brands don't.
If your work takes you far from a capital city, that dealer map is worth more than a better ride.
D-Max, BT-50 and Triton — where the value is
The Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50 share mechanicals; pick on cabin trim and price on the day. Both offer a genuine one-tonne payload, which the more lifestyle-focused utes quietly don't.
The current Triton undercuts everything with a comparable spec and posts a strong 6,250 kg GCM. It's the value pick of the segment if the badge doesn't matter to you.
Four-cylinder or V6?
For tradie duty and suburban driving, the four-cylinder diesels are the smarter buy: cheaper to buy, around 8 L/100km, and no meaningful capability gap under 2,500 kg of trailer.
For sustained highway towing over 2,500 kg, especially with a van and long climbs, the Ranger and Amarok V6 hold speed with far less strain, and you'll feel it after a full day behind the wheel.
What you should actually pay
Ute pricing is the most negotiable segment in the Australian market, because supply finally caught up and stock sits on yards. Advertised drive-away prices on dual cabs are routinely $4,000–$8,000 above what the same variant transacts at nationally.
Book a Test Drive is an independent Australian car broker. Tell us the ute, the accessories and whether you're towing — we'll source the exact build across the national network, negotiate drive-away, arrange finance or a novated lease, and check your GCM maths against the van before you commit.
Ute buying FAQs
What is the best ute in Australia in 2026?
The Ford Ranger V6 is the most complete dual cab — best ride, 6,400 kg GCM, strongest touring credentials. The Mitsubishi Triton is the value pick, the Isuzu D-Max the payload pick, and the Toyota HiLux still wins on resale and service network reach.
Which ute has the highest payload?
Among mainstream 4x4 dual-cab automatics, the Mitsubishi Triton (about 1,030 kg), Mazda BT-50 and Isuzu D-Max (about 1,000 kg) lead. Most lifestyle-focused utes fall below one tonne once accessories are fitted.
Can any ute really tow 3,500 kg?
They're rated to, but GCM limits usually bite first. Subtract your loaded trailer weight from the ute's GCM and what remains must cover the vehicle, passengers, fuel, accessories and tow-ball download. With a 3,000 kg van, most dual cabs have only a few hundred kilograms left.
What's the most fuel-efficient ute?
The four-cylinder diesels — D-Max, BT-50, Triton and HiLux — sit around 7.7–8.3 L/100km combined. V6 Ranger and Amarok run closer to 9.5–10.5 L/100km in real use.
Is a ute a good family car?
A modern dual cab does the job, but rear seats are upright, ISOFIX access is tight, and the ride is firm unladen. If towing isn't part of your life, a large SUV is more comfortable for the same money.
How much can I save buying a ute through a broker?
Utes are the most negotiable segment in Australia right now. Broker-sourced drive-away pricing commonly lands $4,000–$8,000 below advertised on the same variant, before accessories are negotiated.
